Biography

Francesco Sardanelli graduated in Medicine with honors at the Genoa University in 1982 and post-graduated in Radiodiagnostics with honors at the same University in 1986. He served as a staff radiologist at the San Martino Hospital, Genoa (1987-1999) and as adjunct professor at the Genoa University (1993-2000). Since 2001, he is director of the department of radiology at the Research Hospital (IRCCS) Policlinico San Donato, Milan. Roles at the University of Milan: Adjunct professor of radiology (2002-2006), associate professor of radiology (2006-2015) and full professor of radiology (2015-2023); director of the postgraduate school in Nuclear Medicine (2008-2010); director of the postgraduate school in Radiodiagnostics (2015-2021).

He has been consultant for the Istituto Superiore di Sanità, Rome, Italy, for the national radiological coordination of multicenter studies on breast MRI screening of high-risk women (1998-2009), member of the Research Committee of the European Society of Radiology (2006-2010; 2012-2015), president of the European Society of Breast Imaging (2012-2015), and president of the Italian College of Breast Radiologists by SIRM (2014-2015). Since 2009, he is Director of the European Network for Assessment of Imaging in Medicine in the context of the European Institute for Biomedical Imaging Research of the European Society of Radiology. In 2009-2010 he coordinated the EUSOMA working group on breast MRI (Sardanelli F, et al. Magnetic resonance imaging of the breast: recommendations from the EUSOMA working group. Eur J Cancer 2010; 6:1296-1316; 718 citations). In 2010 he was co-founder of Breast Centres Certification, the multidisciplinary body for certification of breast units. Since 2015, he is vice president of the Quality Assurance Scheme Development Group of the European Commission Initiative on Breast Cancer. In 2023-2024 he served as President of the Ethics Committee of San Raffaele Hospital, then as President of the Comitato Etico Territoriale Lombardia 1.

He has been or currently is member of the Editorial Board for several medical journals, including the American Journal of Roentgenology, European Radiology, The Breast, and Radiologia Medica. Since 2017, he is Editor-in-Chief of European  Radiology Experimental (impact factor 3.8). He published 8 books and 46 book chapters. Data from Scopus on February 14, 2024: articles 508; citations 14,140; h-index 59 (ORCID identifier: http://orcid.org/0000-0001-6545-9427).
