Biography
Francesco Sardanelli graduated in Medicine with honors at the Genoa University in 1982 and postgraduated in Radiodiagnostics with honors at the same University in 1986. He served as a staff radiologist at the San Martino Hospital, Genoa (1987-1999) and as adjunct professor at the Genoa University (1993-2000). Since April 2001 to April 2024, he has been director of the department of radiology at the Research Hospital Policlinico San Donato, San Donato Milanese, Milan. Roles at the University of Milan: adjunct professor of radiology (2002-2006), associate professor of radiology (2006-2015), and full professor of radiology (2015-2023); director of the postgraduate school in Nuclear Medicine (2008-2010); director of the postgraduate school in Radiodiagnostics (2015-2021).
Since 2009, he is Director of the European Network for Assessment of Imaging in Medicine in the context of the European Institute for Biomedical Imaging Research of the European Society of Radiology (ESR). Since 2015, he is vice president of the Quality Assurance Scheme Development Group of the European Commission Initiative on Breast Cancer. Since 2020, he is member of the executive committee of the European Society of Breast Cancer Specialists (EUSOMA). Since 2022, he is member of the Comitato Tecnico Scientifico of the Lega Italiana per la Lotta contro i Tumori (LILT) Milano Monza Brianza and since May 2024, he is Scientific Coordinator of the same organization.
He has been consultant for the Istituto Superiore di Sanità, Rome, Italy, for the national radiological coordination of multicenter studies on breast MRI screening of high-risk women (1998-2009), member of the ESR Research Committee (2006-2010; 2012-2015), member of the national council of the Italian Society of Medical and Interventional Radiology (SIRM) (2006-2010), president of the European Society of Breast Imaging (2012-2015), and president of the Italian College of Breast Radiologists by SIRM (2014-2015). In 2009, he coordinated the EUSOMA working group that provided multidisciplinary recommendations for breast MRI (doi:10.1016/j.ejca.2010.02.015). In 2010, he was cofounder of Breast Centres Certification, and since that date, he is officer for breast units’ certification according to EUSOMA guidelines. From 2018 to 2022, he served as member of the Scientific Committee of the Accademia di Senologia “Umberto Veronesi”. In 2019-2021, he was member of the Italian group “Artificial Intelligence and healthcare biomedical research” of Smith Kline Foundation. In 2020, he was member of the external review group of the World Health Organization Rapid Advice Guide on radiological imaging in COVID-19 management. In 2023-2024, he served as president of the Ethics Committee of the San Raffaele Hospital, then as President of the Comitato Etico Territoriale Lombardia 1.
He has been or currently is member of the Editorial/Advisory Board for several medical journals, including the American Journal of Roentgenology, Clinical and Translational Imaging, European Radiology, Insight into Imaging, La Radiologia Medica, and The Breast. Since 2017, he is Editor-in-Chief of European Radiology Experimental. He published 8 books and 47 book chapters.
