Biography
Professor Cheung is Deputy Head of Education and Director of The BMBS Medicine Programmes, and Professor of Breast Surgery and Medical Education at the University of Nottingham, UK.
Following undergraduate medical education and general surgery training at the University of Hong Kong Medical Centre, he conducted translational research at the University of Nottingham, with a Doctor of Medicine awarded in 2001. He then took up the post of Consultant Breast Surgeon at Nottingham University Hospitals where he served as Head of Service, Breast Services (2007-2010) and Lead Clinician for Breast Cancer (2007-2011). He joined the University as a clinical academic in 2004.
Professor Cheung is currently Honorary Consultant Breast Surgeon at the University Hospitals of Derby and Burton.
He obtained surgical fellowship status from Hong Kong, Edinburgh and America. He is also a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Professor Cheung was selected as one of the 12 International Guest Scholars 2007 of the American College of Surgeons, as a recognition of his strong interests and commitment in teaching and research. Professor Cheung is a member of the Faculty of Examiners for Intercollegiate MRCS and the Panel of Examiners of the Intercollegiate Specialty Board
in General Surgery. He is also part of the National Cancer Peer Review team and an External Professional Advisor to the Parliamentary Health Service Ombudsman. Professor Cheung is a member of the Association of Breast Surgery, British Breast Group, British Association of Cancer Surgery, European Society of Breast Cancer Specialists (EUSOMA), American Society of Clinical Oncology, and International Society of Geriatric Oncology (SIOG). In 2015, he received the National Representative of the Year award from SIOG recognising his commitments to geriatric oncology and SIOG. Within SIOG, he is the Treasurer, Member of the Executive Committee and of the Board, and the UK National Representative. Furthermore, he is currently a Member of the Breast Cancer
Guidelines Committee of the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and of the Surgical Specialty Board in General Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
In 2010, Professor Cheung pioneered the Symposium on Primary Breast Cancer in Older Women, the first of its kind in the UK, which has now become a biennial event, hosted by the University in association with SIOG. He is also a member of the Management Committee of the Nottingham Breast Cancer Research Centre, launched in 2018.
Professor Cheung’s key research interests include breast cancer and geriatric oncology. He is the author/co-author of around 200 journal articles and book chapters.
Specifically to EUSOMA, he joined the society in 1996, and has supervised a EUSOMA fellow (2008) and been actively participating in joint EUSOMA/SIOG initiatives – Roundtable discussion on ‘Treatment of axillary lymph nodes in older patients with breast cancer’ (2016) and co-authoring the ‘Updated recommendations regarding the management of older patients with breast cancer’ (published in Lancet Oncology in 2021). He was elected in 2020 to join the Executive Committee.
During this term, Professor Cheung has contributed specifically in one of the work packages in the Innovative collaboration for Inter-specialty cancer training across Europe (INTERACT-EUROPE) and as a Councillor of the Accreditation Council of Oncology in Europe (ACOE). Professor Cheung also leads a research project investigating the disparity of breast reconstruction in the older population across Europe.
